Ben Affleck is in talks to play Tom Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's 3D adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" for Warner Bros.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are attached to play Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, respectively.
Carey Mulligan was recently cast as Daisy Buchanan.
Based on the literary classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the book is set in the rich society of 1920s Long Island, N.Y. and focuses on eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby. Nick Carraway narrates the novel. Daisy Buchanan is Gatsby's long lost love, who is married to a rich man named Tom Buchanan.
Luhrmann and Craig Pearce wrote the adaptation.
Luhrmann is also producing along with Lucy Fisher, Catherine Martin and Douglas Wick.
The novel has been made into a film three previous times (1926, 1949, 1974). The 1974 version starred Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby, along with Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Scott Wilson and Sam Waterston.
Truman Capote was the original screenwriter for the 1974 version, but was replaced by Francis Ford Coppola.
The only thing standing in the way of Affleck joining the cast is a potential scheduling conflict that has Affleck directing his next film, "Argo," which would begin shooting in September.
That would interfere with the planned August start date for "Gatsby."
Affleck was last seen in "The Company Men" and "The Town," which he directed and starred in.
