Lionsgate has cast Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth as the two male leads for their 2012 tentpole "The Hunger Games."
According to Variety, Jennifer Lawrence has been cast in the lead female role of Katniss Everdeen.
Hutcherson, last seen in "The Kids Are All Right," will play Peeta Mellark.
Hemsworth, who was in "The Last Song," will play Gale Hawthorne.
Gary Ross ("Seabiscuit," "Pleasantville") is directing the feature adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling young adult novel.
Billy Ray is writing the adaptation.
"Hunger Games" is the first in a trilogy of science fiction novels that have developed a massive global following. The other two books in the trilogy are "Catching Fire" and "Mockingjay."
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the book focuses on 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen, who must participate in a fight-to-the-death annually televised event called the Hunger Games, which pits youths against each other.
Nina Jacobson is producing through her Color Force production shingle with Jon Kilik.
Shooting is set to begin in late spring or summer.
The film will open on March 23, 2012.
