Academy Award nominee Jennifer Lawrence has been officially cast as Katniss Everdeen in Lionsgate's 2012 tentpole "The Hunger Games."
According to Variety, Hailee Steinfeld and Abigail Breslin were also in contention for the highly coveted female lead.
The film will open on March 23, 2012.
Gary Ross ("Seabiscuit," "Pleasantville") is directing the feature adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling young adult novel.
Billy Ray is writing the adaptation.
"Hunger Games" is the first in a trilogy of science fiction novels that have developed a massive global following.
Set in post-apocalyptic America, the book focuses on 16-year-old heroine Katniss Everdeen, who must participate in a fight-to-the-death annually televised event called the Hunger Games, which pits youths against each other.
Nina Jacobson is producing through her Color Force production shingle.
Shooting is set to begin in late spring or summer.
Lawrence was nominated for best actress for her role in last year's "Winter's Bone."
