Tom Hanks is attached to star in Columbia Picture's big screen adaptation of the real-life story of Capt. Richard Phillips, whose ship was hijacked by Somali pirates in 2009.
According to Variety, Billy Ray will write the script with Scott Rudin, Michael DeLuca, Kevin Spacey and Dana Brunetti producing.
Hanks will play Phillips, whose Maersk Alabama was captured by Somali pirates in spring 2009. Phillips, in order to save his crew, offered himself as a hostage to the pirates. He was eventually rescued by the U.S. Navy. The story created a media sensation and Sony purchased the rights soon after.
Hanks will be seen this summer opposite Julia Roberts in Universal's "Larry Crowne," which he also directed.
He's currently shooting Warner Bros.' adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's novel "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close."
