Robert Downey Jr. is in talks to star in Paul Thomas Anderson's adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's 2009 novel "Inherent Vice."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Anderson has been working on the screenplay for "Vice" while trying to get "The Master," a film about a religious organization starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, off the ground.
"Vice" focuses on a stoner detective solving mysteries in 1969 L.A. while the Manson Family is on trial.
Downey was last seen in "Due Date" and "Iron Man 2."
He recently wrapped filming on the "Sherlock Holmes" sequel, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," that comes out in December.
Anderson last wrote and directed "There Will Be Blood" in 2007.
