Eastwood could go with 'Star is Born'
By Adnan Tezer Jan 21, 2011, 20:49 GMT
Clint Eastwood is in talks to direct Warner Bros.' reboot of "A Star Is Born," with Beyonce Knowles in talks to star as the female lead.
According to Variety, Jon Peters, Billy Gerber and Basil Iwanyk are producing.
Eastwood and producing partner Rob Lorenz would likely come aboard as producers once Eastwood officially signs on as director.
Will Fetters wrote the most recent script for the film, which has been languishing at the studio for several years.
The classic story of "Star" centers on a showbiz ingenue who falls for an established male star, only to see their careers move in opposite directions. The male star's career deteriorates as does his alcoholism while her career ascends into superstardom.
Three previous versions of the project have been made. They include a 1937 version directed by William A. Wellman starring Janet Gaynor and Fredric March; a 1954 version directed by George Cukor starring Judy Garland and James Mason; and most recently in 1976, with Frank Pierson directing and Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson starring.
The 1976 version took the original Hollywood setting and re-set it in the music business.
The new version also will be set in the record industry.
No production date has been set.
Eastwood is in pre-production on the J. Edgar Hoover biopic "J. Edgar," starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
