R&B singer Mary J. Blige is in talks to star in Warner Bros.' screen adaptation of the Broadway musical "Rock of Ages" for New Line Cinema.
According to Variety, "Hairspray" director Adam Shankman will direct and choreograph the film.
The musical's creator, Chris D'Arienzo, wrote the screen adaptation.
Carl Levin, Matthew Weaver, Scott Prisand, Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot will produce. Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver are executive producers.
The story revolves around two dreamers who meet at the Sunset Strip club Rock of Ages, fall in love and try to stay together.
The soundtrack for the musical is set to '80s rock anthems made popular by Journey, Twisted Sister, Joan Jett, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar and other groups.
The musical premiered in Los Angeles in 2006, was on Broadway three years later and received five Tony nominations.
Blige's musical career includes eight multi-platinum albums and nine Grammys. She appeared in Tyler Perry's "I Can Do Bad All By Myself" and will be seen as the iconic jazz musician Nina Simone in "Simone," to be released in 2012.
