García Bernal to get in the ring with Duran
By Adnan Tezer Nov 23, 2010, 20:12 GMT
Gael García Bernal will star as boxing champion Roberto Duran in the biopic "Hands of Stone."
According to Variety, Al Pacino is in talks for the role of Duran's trainer Ray Arcel.
Ben Silverman and Jay Weisleder will produce the $15 million film.
Paul Webster of Shine Pictures will executive produce.
Venezuelan director Jonathan Jakubowicz, who is a co-producer, will direct from his own screenplay.
Duran's son, Robin Duran Iglesias, is an associate producer.
The Panama-born Duran, whose nickname was "Hands of Stone", made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16-year-old and retired in 2002 at age 50. He held world titles at four different weights; lightweight (1972–79), welterweight (1980), junior middleweight (1983–84) and middleweight (1989). He was the second boxer to have fought a span of five decades.
In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard to capture the WBC welterweight title in the infamous "Brawl in Montreal." He would later blindside the boxing world in the November rematch with Leonard by returning to his corner in the eighth round, saying "no mas" (no more).
Production will begin next spring in Panama and New York.
