Carey Mulligan has been offered the lead female role of Daisy Buchanan in Baz Luhrmann's adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" for Columbia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire are attached to play Jay Gatsby and Nick Carraway, respectively.
Based on the literary classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the book is set in the rich society of 1920s Long Island, N.Y. and focuses on eccentric millionaire Jay Gatsby. Buchanan is Gatsby's long lost love.
The novel has been made into a film three previous times (1926, 1949, 1974). The 1974 version starred Robert Redford as Jay Gatsby, along with Mia Farrow, Bruce Dern, Karen Black, Scott Wilson and Sam Waterston.
Truman Capote was the original screenwriter for the 1974 version, but was replaced by Francis Ford Coppola.
Mulligan was recently seen in Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and "Never Let Me Go." She is currently shooting the action film "Drive," opposite Ryan Gosling.
