Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep are in talks to star in the film adaptation of Tracy Letts' darkly comic Pulitzer-winning play "August: Osage County."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, John Wells would direct the film from an adapted screenplay written by Letts.
The play premiered in 2007 at Chicago's Steppenwolf Theatre Company.
Harvey Weinstein will produce with Jean Doumanian.
The movie would shoot next summer.
The play revolves around a family's long-buried pains and present conflicts after its patriarch, Beverly Weston, dies.
Streep would play the drug-addicted matriarch Violet Weston. Roberts would play the eldest daughter, Barbara Fordham, whose estranged husband has had an affair with one of his students.
Roberts most recently appeared in "Eat Pray Love" and "Valentine's Day." She stars in Tom Hanks' "Larry Crowne," which Universal will release next year.
Streep most recently appeared in the 2009 films "It's Complicated" and "Julie & Julia."
