Lionsgate will open the Nicole Kidman-Aaron Eckhart drama "Rabbit Hole" in a limited release on December 17.
According to Variety, the opening will qualify the film for awards season, with an additional rollout Christmas Day before opening wide January 14, 2011.
Lionsgate acquired North American distribution rights at the Toronto Film Festival last week.
Directed by John Cameron Mitchell, the film is based on the Pulitzer-Prize winning play of the same name by David Lindsay-Abaire, who also wrote the screenplay.
"Rabbit Hole" tells the story of parents (Kidman and Eckhart) struggling to deal with the death of their four-year-old son.
The cast includes Dianne Wiest, Sandra Oh and Tammy Blanchard.
Kidman produced, along with Per Saari, through her Blossom Films production company.
Producers also included Leslie Urdang and Dean Vanech for Olympus Pictures, as well as Gigi Pritzker of Odd Lot Entertainment.
