Michael Caine prepping for 'Journey 2'

Michael Caine is in negotiations to join the cast of New Line’s "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" opposite Josh Hutcherson and Dwayne Johnson.

According to Variety, Brad Peyton is directing with Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson of Contrafilm producing along with Charlotte Huggins.

The 3D sequel to 2008’s "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D" finds explorer Sean Anderson bringing his mother to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather.

Hutcherson will again portray explorer Sean Anderson while Johnson will play the boyfriend of Anderson’s mother. Caine would play the missing grandfather.

Production will begin this fall in Hawaii and North Carolina.

A release date has been set for September 23, 2011.

Caine was most recently seen in Christopher Nolan's "Inception."
