'American' guns down holiday weekend box office

Focus Features' George Clooney film "The American" won the domestic box office with $16.4 million over the end-of-the-summer Labor Day weekend.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, after opening Wednesday, the film has a domestic cumulative of $19.5 million.
Fox's Robert Rodriguez actioner "Machete" came in at No. 2 as it opened with $14 million.
Sony's "Takers" finished No. 3 with $13.5 million for a domestic cumulative of $40 million.
Lionsgate's horror film "The Last Exorcism" placed at No. 4 with $8.8 million for a domestic cumulative of $33.6 million.
Warners' romantic comedy "Going the Distance" opened at No. 5 with $8.6 million.
