Dwayne Johnson is in talks to join New Line's "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island," the sequel to 2008s "Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D."
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Brad Peyton will direct with Josh Hutcherson reprising his role as explorer Sean Anderson.
Brendan Fraser starred in the original but will not return in the sequel due to scheduling conflicts.
Beau Flynn and Tripp Vinson of Contrafilm are producing along with Charlotte Huggins.
Johnson will play the boyfriend of Hutcherson's mom, whom Hutcherson must bring to a mythical island to find his missing grandfather.
The script will be loosely based on Jules Verne's "The Mysterious Island."
Production will start in late October in North Carolina and Hawaii.
Like the first movie, the sequel will be shot and released in 3D. The original grossed over $250 million worldwide in 2008.
Johnson is currently shooting "The Fast and the Furious 5" and will star in CBS Films' action movie "Faster," that opens in November.
