Jeremy Renner ("The Hurt Locker") has been cast opposite Tom Cruise in the fourth installment of Paramount’s "Mission: Impossible" franchise.
According to Variety, Paramount insiders disclosed that the untitled film won’t be called "Mission: Impossible IV."
Brad Bird is directing a script from Josh Applebaum and André Nemec, with shooting expected to begin in the fall.
Bird will shoot in Vancouver, Prague, Dubai and the U.S.
Paramount has set a Dec. 16, 2011 release date.
Details of the plot are under wraps.
The thought is that Renner could play the central character in future installments as Cruise’s role diminishes.
J.J. Abrams is producing the film through his Paramount-housed Bad Robot company.
Renner next stars in Ben Affleck’s crime drama “The Town,” which Warner Bros. opens Sept. 17.
