Sony has cast the relatively unknown actress Rooney Mara in the coveted role of Lisbeth Salander opposite Daniel Craig in "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," the adaptation of the best-selling book by Stieg Larsson.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, David Fincher is directing from a Steven Zaillian script, with Scott Rudin producing.
Mara beat out several established actresses for the role including Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway, Ellen Page and Mia Wasikowska.
The film follows disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) who teams up with Salander (Mara), a tattooed and pierced computer hacker, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a woman 40 years prior.
Sony will open the film on December 21, 2011.
Shooting begins next month in Sweden.
Mara appeared in the films "Tanner Hall" and "Youth in Revolt" before starring in the remake of "Nightmare on Elm Street."
She was also cast by Fincher in his upcoming Facebook film, "The Social Network."
