Reese Witherspoon is close to signing on to star as Peggy Lee in Fox 2000’s untitled biopic on the legendary jazz singer.
According to Variety, Nora Ephron would direct from her own script.
Witherspoon is producing with Marc Platt.
The film will explore the singer, songwriter, composer and actress’s nearly seven decade career.
Lee achieved fame during the big band era and had her first hit, "Somebody Else is Taking My Place," in 1941. She recorded a series of hit albums and songs, including "Fever" and "Is That All There Is?" over the next 30 years.
She wrote a number of songs and voiced several characters in Disney's 1955 animated film "Lady in the Tramp."
Her film credits included the 1952 remake of "The Jazz Singer" and "Pete Kelly's Blues."
Ephron last directed "Julie & Julia" starring Meryl Streep.
Witherspoon will be seen this December in the comedy "How Do You Know?" opposite Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson.
