Peter Jackson could be headed back to Middle Earth to direct the two Hobbit films following the departure of Guillermo del Toro.
Deadline Hollywood is reporting the director is in negotiations with Warner Bros , New Line, and MGM - which could put the films back on track to start shooting by the end of the year. He is also expected to shoot both films back-to-back.
Rumors had been floating around the net that director Bret Ratner was in talks to get the job of helming the prequels to the Jackson’s epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, and Jackson’s return should be the answered prayers for Lord of the Rings fans everywhere.
In May, Del Toro (who helped write the screenplay for the two films) announced he was leaving the project due to studio delays. With his departure announced, rumors starting flooding the Internet about who would end up as The Hobbit director and if the project would ever make it to the screen.
Rumored directors in the running included Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows director David Yates and District 9's Neill Blomkamp.
