Freida Pinto and John Lithgow are in talks to star in 20th Century Fox's "Planet of the Apes" prequel "Rise of the Apes," opposite James Franco.
According to Variety, Rupert Wyatt will direct from a script by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. Silver and Jaffa will produce with Chernin Entertainment's Peter Chernin and Dylan Clark.
Set in present day San Francisco, the film deals with the aftermath of genetic engineering experiments that lead to intelligence in apes and a war for supremacy.
Franco will play a scientist who has been working on a cure for Alzheimer's that is being tested on apes.
Pinto will play the female lead role of Caroline, a primatologist. Lithgow will play the father of Franco's character.
The film starts shooting in July in British Columbia with a June 24, 2011 release date set.
Pinto made her acting debut with "Slumdog Millionaire" and is currently shooting the Greek fantasy epic "Immortals."
Lithgow is coming off his Golden Globe-winning role as a serial killer in Showtime's "Dexter."
