Michael Fassbender is in early talks to play the villainous Magneto in Fox's "X-Men: First Class," which Matthew Vaughn is directing.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, James McAvoy has been cast as Professor Xavier.
The film will focus on Charles Xavier as a young man discovering his powers along with Erik Lensherr. Before they took on the respective personas of Professor X and Magneto, the two were close friends. A rift developed between them, leading to the war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.
Production begins this summer with a June 3, 2011 release date set.
Fassbender's breakout role came as Canadian spy Archie Hicox in "Inglourious Basterds." He can be currently seen in "Jonah Hex."
