Disney is in early talks with director Sam Raimi to direct a prequel to the 1939 classic "The Wizard of Oz."
According to Variety, the film will be called "Oz, the Great and Powerful."
Joe Roth ("Alice in Wonderland") is producing.
The prequel tells of a circus performer who is transported through a tornado to the mysterious land of Oz, where he is mistaken for the all-knowing Wizard.
Robert Downey Jr. has been rumored to star in the film, though no final decisions have been made yet.
"Oz" would be the first project for Raimi since he left Sony's "Spiderman" franchise in January. Sony decided against making the fourth "Spiderman" film, with Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire, in order to reboot the series. Marc Webb ("500 Days of Summer") will direct the adolescent-based reboot.
Disney is aiming for the "Oz" prequel to be a franchise especially in the wake of "Alice in Wonderland" grossing $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
The studio is shooting for a 2013 release.
