James McAvoy will play the young Professor X character in Fox's "X-Men: First Class."
According to Variety, the origins story of the Marvel tale will be directed by Matthew Vaughn.
The Professor X character was played by Patrick Stewart in the first three "X-Men" films.
The film will focus on Charles Xavier as a young man discovering his powers along with Erik Lensherr. Before they took on the respective personas of Professor X and Magneto, the two were close friends. A rift developed between them, leading to the war between Magneto's Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.
Bryan Singer, who directed the first two "X-Men" films, conceived the story. He is producing along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
Production begins this summer with a June 3, 2011 release date set.
