Quentin Tarantino to head jury at Venice Film Festival
May 6, 2010, 13:02 GMT
Venice, Italy - US director and screenwriter Quentin Tarantino will head the jury at this year's 67th Venice Film Festival, organizers announced Thursday.
The festival, which was launched in 1932 and is the world's oldest film competition, this year runs September 1 to 11.
'Tarantino has been one of the most startling directors in cinema today. As a filmmaker, he has become a studied and imitated 'point of reference,' and he is perhaps the only American auteur to be adored worldwide like a rock star,' festival organizers said in a statement.
The influence of Tarantino's passion for so-called Italian genre movies from the 1960s and 70s - including Spaghetti westerns and splatter thrillers - could be seen in many of his own films including the much acclaimed Reservoir Dogs (1992) and Pulp Fiction (1994).
The filmmaker's most recent effort, Inglorious Basterds, received eight Oscar nominations at the 2010 awards.
