Sharlto Copley is in negotiations to star in "I Am Number Four," DreamWorks' adaptation of the young-adult science fiction book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes.
British actor Alex Pettyfer has been cast in the title role of Four, one of nine aliens who escape their home planet before its destruction by a rival species and hide out on Earth disguised as high school kids.
Copley will play Four’s adult guardian and mentor.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Smallville" creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar wrote the screenplay.
D.J. Caruso is directing with Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg producing. Chris Bender and J.C. Spink are executive producing with David Valdes.
Copley, a South African actor who shot to fame in Neill Blomkamp's "District 9," can be seen as Howling Mad Murdock this summer in 20th Century Fox's "The A-Team."
