DreamWorks Studios is in early talks with Emma Stone to play one of the lead roles in the film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's best-selling novel "The Help."
The film explores how the unspoken code of behavior governing Southern households in 1960s Jackson, Mississippi is shattered when a young female writer interviews a maid, who speaks candidly about her experiences. This sets off a chain reaction of events that are felt throughout the entire community.
Stone would play the role of Skeeter Phelan, the writer.
Tate Taylor, a childhood friend of Stockett's, will direct from his adapted script.
According to Variety, Chris Columbus, Michael Barnathan and Mark Radcliffe will produce through their 1492 Pictures production company.
Stone ("Superbad," "Zombieland") can be seen in 20th Century Fox's upcoming "Marmaduke."
