'The Hurt Locker' makes Oscar history

By Adnan Tezer Mar 8, 2010, 20:00 GMT

"The Hurt Locker" captured best picture at the 82nd Annual Academy Awards on Sunday. The Summit release about an Army bomb disposal unit took home six Oscars, including a historic best director Oscar for director Kathryn Bigelow, the first woman ever to win in that category.

With just under $15 million in domestic grosses as of Sunday, "The Hurt Locker," became the lowest-grossing film to win best picture in modern history.

"Locker" won over not only Fox's "Avatar," the highest-grossing film of all time, but also over box office hits including Warner Bros.' "The Blind Side," Sony's "District 9," the Weinstein Co.'s "Inglourious Basterds" and Disney/Pixar's "Up," as well as Lionsgate’s  "Precious," Paramount ‘s "Up in the Air," Sony Classics’ "An Education" and Focus’ "A Serious Man."

There were no surprises in the acting categories, with the winners already having claimed numerous guild and critics' prizes.

Jeff Bridges won best actor for his performance as an alcoholic country singer in "Crazy Heart."

Sandra Bullock won best actress for her performance in "The Blind Side" as a suburban mother who takes in a homeless black student.

Mo'Nique won best supporting actress for her portrayal of an abusive mother in "Precious," while Christoph Waltz won best supporting actor for his performance as a sadistic Nazi in "Inglourious Basterds."
