Cruise signs on for 'Mission: Impossible IV'
By Adnan Tezer Feb 10, 2010, 19:05 GMT
Tom Cruise has agreed to reprise his role as Ethan Hunt in "Mission: Impossible IV."
Paramount has already set a release date for 2011's Memorial Day weekend that will pit the film against Warner Bros.' "Hangover" sequel and the second weekend of Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean 4."
According to Variety, Paramount is currently seeking a director for "Mission: Impossible IV."
Cruise and J.J. Abrams, who co-wrote the "Mission: Impossible III" screenplay and directed the film, will produce from a screenplay by Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec.
Appelbaum and Nemec spent four seasons with Abrams as co-executive producers of "Alias."
The reunion between Cruise and Paramount seemed unlikely after Cruise's production deal there was terminated in 2006 (the year "Mission: Impossible III" was released) by Viacom chief Sumner Redstone.
The three previous "Mission: Impossible" films have generated combined worldwide grosses of $1.4 billion for Paramount, including nearly $400 million for 2006's "Mission: Impossible III".
