Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron's "Avatar" has broken the previous all-time record holder "Titanic" to become the highest domestic grossing film ever with $601.1 million.
"Avatar" beat "Titanic's" $600.8 million record earlier this week after earning nine Academy Award nominations, including picture and director. "Avatar" tied with Kathryn Bigelow’s "The Hurt Locker" for the most nominations.
Cameron's 3D sci-fi epic has won the domestic box office for seven consecutive weeks.
"Avatar" has earned $1.45 billion overseas to also overtake "Titanic" as the highest grossing film internationally.
According to Variety, the film also holds the record as the highest worldwide grosser with a current cumulative of $2.05 billion.
