New York - A US film editor who worked on several prize- winning films was killed in a tragic auto accident that resulted from a police-chase of robbers, the New York Post reported Saturday.
Karen Schmeer, 39, of Boston, was the indirect victim of the robbery of an apothecary Friday on Manhattan's West Side, near 90th Street, where she was staying with friends while editing a new film.
The three robbers were fleeing with a sack of medicines in a rented car. Pursued by police, the robbers rammed into several autos and hit Schmeer, who was crossing the street carrying groceries.
Schmeer worked closely with director Errol Morris, including on the Oscar-winning The Fog of War, about former defence secretary Robert MacNamara and the war in Vietnam. Her work on 'Sergio,' the film about the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights who was killed in a 2003 Baghdad terrorist bomb, won her a Sundance prize for best film editing.
'She was one of the most talented documentary filmmakers working in the field today,' Greg Barker, who directed 'Sergio,' was quoted as saying.
