On Wednesday, James Cameron’s "Avatar" passed the $1.12 billion total set by 2003's "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" to become the second-highest worldwide grosser ever.
The film currently has a domestic cumulative of $374.4 million and a foreign cumulative of $760.8 million, for a worldwide total of $1.14 billion and counting.
Cameron's "Titanic" is the all-time top worldwide grosser, earning $1.84 billion in 1997 and 1998.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Avatar" is now ready to break the top 10 list of all-time top domestic grossing films.
By the week’s end, the film will pass No. 10 domestic grosser "Star Wars: Episode III-Revenge of the Sith," which earned $380.3 million in 2005. It should continue to climb that list as the next few weeks unfold.
