Writer Peter Iliff has been hired to adapt a big-screen version of "American Gladiators."

The film, which will feature the muscle-bound characters as superheroes, will be based on the TV show that first aired in 1988 and has been broadcast in more than 90 countries. NBC aired a primetime revival of the show in 2008.

According to Variety, Scott Mednick is producing, and "American Gladiators" creator Johnny Ferraro is executive producing.

Mednick is shooting for a 2011 release.

Iliff wrote the 1991 cult surfer film "Point Break" and recently wrote a sequel to the film which will be directed by Jeff Wadlow.
