20th Century Fox will now open "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakuel" on Dec. 23, instead of Christmas Day in an effort to capitalize on children being out of school on the Wednesday before Christmas.According to Variety, the new release date will allow it to get a head start on Christmas weekend, when competition will be heavy between new releases and films already in wide release. On Dec. 18, Fox will release James Cameron's 3D epic "Avatar." Opening on Dec. 25 are Warner Bros.' Robert Downey Jr.-Jude Law film "Sherlock Holmes" and Universal's Nancy Meyers comedy "It's Complicated," starring Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin. Two films also go into wide release on Dec. 25; Paramount's George Clooney film "Up in the Air," directed by Jason Reitman and the Weinstein Co.'s musical "Nine," directed by Rob Marshall.
