Warner Bros.' Spike Jonze-directed "Where the Wild Things Are" topped the domestic box office over the weekend. Based on Maurice Sendak's children's classic book, the film grossed an estimated $32.5 million. Overture Films saw its biggest opening as the Jamie Foxx-Gerard Butler film "Law Abiding Citizen," took in $21.3 million to place No. 2. Paramount’s "Paranormal Activity" took the No. 3 spot with $20.2 million as it expanded to 760 theaters in its fourth weekend. According to Variety, the film has grossed a cumulative of $33.7 million, and the studio plans to expand the film to 1,800 locations starting next weekend. Universal’s "Couples Retreat" came in fourth place with $17.9 million for a cumulative of $63.3 million. Sony/Screen Gems' "The Stepfather" opened with $12.3 million to place No. 5 for the weekend.
