Hugh Jackman likes 'Steel'

Hugh Jackman is in talks to star in "Real Steel" directed by Shawn Levy for DreamWorks.

The film is an underdog tale of a fighter who has to reinvent himself when human boxers are outsourced by robots. Jackman would play the ex-fighter, who becomes a struggling Robot Boxing promoter and finds a forgotten robot that always seems to win. He also finds out he has a 13-year-old son, and they bond as the robot fights its way toward the top.

According to Variety, John Gatins is rewriting the current draft with Levy. The original script was written by Dan Gilroy and has already been rewritten by Les Bohem.

The studio is looking at a May production start. Angry Films' Don Murphy and Susan Montford are producing. Executive producers are Steven Spielberg and ImageMovers’ Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke and Steve Starkey. Levy also is a producer.

The premise is based on a short story by Richard Matheson. "Real Steel" is a reunion between Matheson and Spielberg; Matheson wrote Spielberg's directing debut, the 1971 made-for-TV film "Duel," and was a story editor on Spielberg's "Amazing Stories."
