'Final Destination' debuts on top of weekend box office

By Adnan Tezer Aug 31, 2009, 22:23 GMT

Warner Bros./New Line's "The Final Destination" won the weekend box office as it opened to an estimated $28.3 million from 3,121 theaters, delivering the best opening for the franchise.

Quentin Tarantino’s "Inglourious Basterds", which is distributed through The Weinstein Company, fell 47% in its second weekend to come in second place with an estimated $20.4 million from 3,165 runs for a domestic cumulative of $73.8 million.

Overseas, the film grossed an estimated $19.4 million from 2,891 runs in 31 territories for a foreign total of $59.1 million.

According to Variety, the worldwide tally for the film is $132.9 million.

Dimension’s "Halloween II" opened to an estimated $17.4 million from 3,025 runs for a third place finish. Executives at The Weinstein Company, which owns Dimension, said they were sufficiently pleased with the opening and impressed enough to greenlight production of "Halloween 3D" for release next summer.

Sony’s “District 9” continued to be one of the summer’s surprise hits as it earned $10.7 million for the weekend, good enough for a fourth place finish, and a domestic cumulative of $90.8 million.

Paramount’s “G.I. Joe” came in fifth place with $8 million for a domestic cumulative of $132.4 million.
