'Funny People' wins weekend box office

"Funny People" launched respectably at the top of a limited weekend box office with $23.4 million. The film faced a dual challenge as a departure from typical Adam Sandler comedies and from writer-director Judd Apatow's raunchier films.

According to Variety, that figure marked the lowest tally for a No. 1 film this summer. The Universal film came in with 23% less box office than the July 10-12 launch of Universal’s "Bruno."

The weekend's other opener, Fox's family comedy "Aliens in the Attic," turned in a disappointing opening weekend in fifth place with $7.8 million.

The third weekend of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" came in second place with $17.7 million to bring its 19-day cumulative to $255.5 million.

"The Half-Blood Prince" also remained the dominant film in international markets with $42.7 million in 64 markets, raising its three-week foreign cumulative to $492.3 million. Worldwide total for the sixth "Potter" is now $747.7 million.

Disney's family film "G-Force" finished third in its second weekend with $17.1 million to bring its 10-day cumulative to $66.5 million. Sony's Katherine Heigl comedy "The Ugly Truth" came in fourth in its second weekend with $13 million for a total just short of $55 million.
