Calico Ghost Town is headed for the bigscreen.

According to Variety, Allentown Productions, headed by documentary filmmaker James Moll, has acquired feature rights to Knott's Berry Farm's Calico Ghost Town and all the rides and original characters created for the theme park.

Allentown director of development Chris W. King shepherded the concept with Moll, who will produce. Story's set in the Wild West at the turn of the century, centering on the boomtown gold mining town of Calico, which has been overrun by ghosts and evil supernatural creatures.

At its peak, the real Calico had a population of 1,200 and more than 500 silver mines. The Mojave Desert town was abandoned in 1907 and later became a tourist attraction that was at one time owned by Knott's and is now independently operated.

Knott's Berry Farm's version of Calico Ghost Town is the oldest attraction at the amusement park in Buena Park.

Moll expects to announce additional financing along with a writer and a director later this summer.

Knott's, visited during the past decade by an estimated 30 million people, is owned and operated by Cedar Fair Entertainment Co.
