Oscar best picture nominations expands to 10 in 2010

The Motion Picture Academy announced Wednesday that for the first time in more than 65 years, the field of best picture nominees will be expanded to 10 contenders for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards.

According to Variety, Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences president Sid Ganis announced the news Wednesday morning at a Beverly Hills news conference.

The last time the Oscar race featured 10 best picture contenders was the 16th Oscar ceremony in 1943, when "Casablanca" won for Best Picture. There were 10 best picture nominations for most of the Academy Awards' first decade.

Oscar nominations will be announced February 2 with the awards handed out March 7 at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

Instead of increasing the best picture category to ten, the academy should have increased each of the top 5 categories to 6 each. I could be wrong, but it seems Sid Ganis is just selling out, and gave no real forthought to this.
