Dustin Hoffman has his 'Version'

Dustin Hoffman will star alongside Paul Giamatti in the independent drama "Barney's Version," based on Mordecai Richler's final novel, with Robert Lantos producing through his Serendipity Point production company.

According to Variety, Richard J. Lewis will direct from the screenplay by Michael Konyves.

Hoffman will play a retired cop and father of the story's title character who has led a wild life that includes three marriages, two children and status as a suspect in the mysterious disappearance of his friend.

Two of Richler's novels have been adapted into features, "The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz" which starred Richard Dreyfuss and "Joshua Then and Now," which starred James Woods and Alan Arkin. Lantos produced “Joshua” as well.

Principal photography will begin August 17th in Rome.
