'Star Trek' launches with $76.5 million

Paramount’s “Star Trek” had a successful opening weekend, debuting to $76.5 million at the domestic box office, including $4 million in Thursday night runs.

According to Variety the film also had a stellar opening weekend overseas as well, grossing $35.5 million from 5,000 locations in 54 markets for a worldwide total of $106 million.

Last weekend’s other new wide release was Summit Entertainment’s urban comedy “Next Day Air,” which struggled. The film grossed $4 million from 1,138 runs to place No. 6.

“Star Trek,” directed by J.J. Abrams, posted the second-best domestic opening of the year after 20th Century Fox’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which opened to $85 million last weekend.

With competition from “Star Trek,” “Wolverine” declined a steep 68% in its second weekend to an estimated $27 million to place No. 2 for the weekend. Its domestic total stands at $129.6 million.

Teen girls and women made their presence felt as they sought alternatives to the two main action films dominating the weekend. In its second weekend, Warner Bros. and New Line’s romantic comedy “Ghosts of Girlfriends Past” made an estimated $10.5 million, placing No. 3 for the weekend. Its domestic total stands at $30.2 million.

Sony Pictures’ “Obsessed” and Warner’s “17 Again” came in Nos. 4 and 5, respectively.
