‘Videodrome’ to be remade by Universal

David Cronenberg’s 1983 thriller “Videodrome” is set to be remade by Universal with Ehren Kruger handling screenwriting duties as well as producing with partner Daniel Bobker.According to Variety, the producers got the rights from Rene Malo, who will also serve as executive producer. Universal, which distributed the original, exercised their rights for first refusal on a remake of the film.

In the original, James Woods starred as Max Renn, the head of Civic TV Channel 83. Renn proceeds to boost the station’s ratings by showing “Videodrome,” a torture/murder-infused series that hypnotizes its viewers.

The remake will use the original as a starting point for a sci-fi action thriller.
