Variety reports the studios have obtained the rights to the series, and have hired Chad and Dara Creasey to pen the script. Gary Foster is attached to produce the film with Harold Berkowitz signed on as executive producer.
The story will be set in modern times and will see a grandfather clash over the parenting skills of his son. His son has a more modern-day approach to being a parent which differs from his traditional approach.
The television series featured Robert Young (considered one of the best television fathers) and began on NBC radio in 1949. The series moved to television in 1954 and ran until 1960. It has remained popular in reruns.
Fox and Regency are just the latest studios trying to get the series to the big screen. Universal attempted to make a film version in 1994 and hired "Brokeback Mountain" writers Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana to pen a script. Paramount and Nickelodeon attempted a comedy version of the story in 2003 with Tim Allen attached.
Foster, Fox and Regency picked up the rights to the series after an eight month deal with the estates of Young and the show's creators and producers.
