Maggie Gyllenhaal joins Emma Thompson for next ‘Nanny McPhee’ film

Maggie Gyllenhaal has signed on to star in “Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang” – which will see Emma Thompson returning to the role of the governess with a bit of magic in the sequel to the 2005 family film. Maggie Gyllenhaal to join Emma Thompson for Nanny McPhee's next big screen adventure.

The sequel will also feature Rhys Ifans, Maggie Smith and Asa Butterfield ("The Boy in the Striped Pajamas"). Ralph Fiennes is in talks for a cameo appearance in the film.“Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang” will mark the feature directing debut for Susanna White and is set to start shooting this summer. Working Title’s Eric Fellner and Tim Bevan are scheduled to produce with Lindsay Doran. Debra Hayward and Liza Chasin have signed on to handle executive producing chores.

The film’s plot will follow a group of children who move from the city to a farm due to the war. It is based on the hit "Nurse Matilda" children’s books from Christianna Brand. The first “Nanny McPhee” film featured Thompson’s character helping the recently widowed Mr. Brown (Colin Firth) tame his seven very naughty children. The children had managed to drive away 17 previous nannies, but quickly learn things had changed when Nanny McPhee took control.
