'Fast & Furious' shifts into box office top gear

'Fast & Furious' put the pedal to the metal this weekend at the U.S. box office, making an estimated $72.5 million. Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster star in 'Fast & Furious'.

This latest instalment of the fast car franchise sees Vin Diesel and Paul Walker head back to the streets where it all started. In second spot was Dreamworks Animation's 'Monsters Vs. Aliens' with $33.5 million, bringing its total take so far to over $105 million.The third spot was filled by Lionsgate's horror thriller 'The Haunting in Connecticut' with $9.6 million and over $37 million so far.Nicolas Cage's action-thriller 'Knowing' sat at number four with comedy 'I Love You, Man' taking fifth place.Miramax's adult comedy 'Adventureland' opened in sixth spot with $6 million.Julia Roberts starrer 'Duplicity' was in seventh spot with family action feature 'Race to Witch Mountain' in at number eight.Nine was comedy-drama 'Sunshine Cleaning' and the tenth spot was Fox's thriller '12 Rounds.USA Box Office Top Ten (millions)1 Fast and Furious $72.5
