In second spot was Dreamworks Animation's 'Monsters Vs. Aliens' with $33.5 million, bringing its total take so far to over $105 million.
The third spot was filled by Lionsgate's horror thriller 'The Haunting in Connecticut' with $9.6 million and over $37 million so far.
Nicolas Cage's action-thriller 'Knowing' sat at number four with comedy 'I Love You, Man' taking fifth place.
Miramax's adult comedy 'Adventureland' opened in sixth spot with $6 million.
Julia Roberts starrer 'Duplicity' was in seventh spot with family action feature 'Race to Witch Mountain' in at number eight.
Nine was comedy-drama 'Sunshine Cleaning' and the tenth spot was Fox's thriller '12 Rounds.
