Coen brothers get some True Grit

Joel and Ethan Coen are set to adapt Charles Portis' Western novel True Grit. John Wayne played one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Marshal.

John Wayne played one-eyed Rooster Cogburn, the meanest available U.S. Marshal.The book follows the adventures of fourteen year-old Mattie Ross after her father is shot and robbed in Fort Smith. Mattie then leaves home, accompanied by a hardened U.S. Marshal, to seek the criminals responsible. The pair's pursuit leads them into Indian Territory. The original 1969 adaptation featured John Wayne as the marshal, Kim Darby as the teenager. Glen Campbell, Jeff Corey, Robert Duvall and Dennis Hopper also starred. Variety reports the new movie will stay closer to the book than the 1969 film and tell the tale from the girl’s perspective.Read more about the novel and original film.
