Variety reports the actor signed a long-term commitment for the role of Fury – one of the world’s greatest spies and the leader of Shield. The deal has the potential for Jackson to handle the role in nine Marvel films – which are expected to include "Captain America," "Thor," "The Avengers" and "The Shield."
Jackson appeared as Fury (who shows up in a number of Marvel titles) in the final moments of the summer blockbuster “Iron Man” – where he was in shadow and approached Downey’s Tony Stark about joining a new group of heroes.
Due to a low offer to return as the character, it looked as if “Iron Man” would be Jackson’s only appearance as Fury, but a deal was finally reached between the actor and the company.
“Iron Man” earned more than $600 million, but Marvel has reportedly been trying to get the sequel into theaters as cheaply as possible. Mickey Rourke and Sam Rockwell were reportedly also offered what was considered a low amount for roles as villains in the upcoming sequel.
“Iron Man 2” is scheduled to hit the big screen during the summer 2010 season with Paramount handling the distribution. Director Jon Favreau is returning with Robert Downey Jr., and the film is expected to start shooting this spring.
