Variety reports Schreiber is up to play the boss and friend of CIA officer Evelyn Salt (Jolie). Salt is accused of being a Russian sleeper spy, and is forced to avoid capture while trying to prove she is innocent. She is accused of trying to carry out an attempt to assassinate the president.
Phillip Noyce is attached to direct the film (which started out as “Edwin A. Salt” with Tom Cruise signed on for the title role), and filming is set to begin in March with locations in New York.
It is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Sunil Perkash with Ric Kidney and Mark Vahradian executive producing.
“Salt” has had trouble getting to the screen with several directors eyeing the project – including Peter Berg, Michael Mann and Terry George. The main character was changed to a female when Jolie signed on for the film.
Schreiber is set to rip up the big screen as Sabretooth in the upcoming Hugh Jackman superhero flick “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” He will also appear in Ang Lee's drama "Taking Woodstock."
