‘Friday the 13th’ slashes to the box office top spot

New Line returned Jason Voorhees to the big screen, and the silent killer gave the studio the No. 1 movie at the weekend box office.

Variety reports the “Friday the 13th” remake earned an estimated $45.2 million during the long President’s Weekend – which was the best opening for a horror genre title.The film was brought to the big screen by Warner Bros., New Line, Paramount, and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. Although technically a remake, it is the 11th outing for Jason under the “Friday the 13th” franchise. He also had a tussle with Freddy Krueger from the "Nightmare on Elm Street" franchise.New Line and Warners Bros. romantic comedy “He’s Just Not That Into You” continued to find love on the big screen with a No. 2 placing at the weekend box office. The film earned an estimated $23.4 million during the long weekend and has earned an estimated $58.3 million in its first 10 days of release.20th Century Fox’s action flick “Taken” (with Liam Neeson) claimed the No. 3 spot at the weekend box office with an estimated $22.2 million. The film dropped just 8% from the previous weekend, and has earned an estimated $80.9 million since its release. Focus Features’ 3-D family film “Coraline” took the No. 4 spot with an estimated $20.1 million. The film has earned an estimated $40.4 million since its release and has benefited from the sale of higher costing 3-D tickets.Disney’s chick flick “Confessions of a Shopaholic” had a less than stellar opening weekend with a No. 5 placing and an estimated $17.3 million. Some of the blame for the film (which stars Isla Fisher and is based on two books by Sophie Kinsella) rocky start is being put on the economy and people not identifying with the character’s need for shopping.Kevin James showed he can still keep the audience laughing as Sony’s “Paul Blart: Mall Cop” claimed the No. 6 spot at the weekend box office and moved past the $100 million mark. The film earned an estimated $13.9 million during the long weekend and has earned $112.7 million in its five weeks of release. Sony’s “The Pink Panther 2” also struggled in its second weekend. The film dropped to a No. 7 placing with an estiamted $10.8 million. It has earned $24.1 million since its release. The first Steve Martin “Panther” film earned $49.7 million by its second weekend.Sony’s “The International” with Naomi Watts and Clive Owen took the No. 8 place at the weekend box office with an estimated $10.7 million.
