Tom Cruise could be spying for David Cronenberg’s "The Matarese Circle."© Insidefoto / PR PhotosVariety reports the actor is in talks to join the film which MGM is set to start production on sometime this year. The film’s screenplay was penned by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas – who reportedly updated Ludlum’s Cold War setting.If he takes the role, Cruise would go up against Washington as two enemy spies who find themselves targets of a group known as the Matarese.The film is produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura, Nick Wechsler, Jeffrey Weiner and Ben Smith. Henry Morrison is set to handle executive producing chores. It is expected to arrive in theaters in 2010.
